What is Continuous Data Protection?

Continuous data protection (CDP), also called continuous backup or real-time backup, refers to backup of computer data by automatically saving a copy of every change made to that data, essentially capturing every version of the data that the user saves. In its true form it allows the user or administrator to restore data to any point in time.

Continuous Data Protection (CDP) should be chosen to utilize journal-based technology to keep a log of all the changes occurring in a specified time frame, offering any point-in-time recovery in increments of seconds for the entire length of the journal.  CDP constantly backs up your data, for example snapshot-based recovery puts your business at risk of higher data loss due to infrequent restore points that are captured, while CDP minimizes this with thousands of restore points throughout the journal history.

Why Is Data Protection Important?

Most Common Data Disaster Scenarios

  • Ransomware attacks

  • Cybercrime, hacking, or phishing

  • Physical loss of premises (from fire, extreme weather, flooding, etc.)

  • Data corruption from electrical surge or power failure

  • Theft or vandalism

  • Hardware or software malfunction

  • Accidental file deletion

HPE Zerto for Your Data Protection

Continuous Data Protection (CDP) with Zerto—including near synchronous replication and unique journaling— enables organizations to recover from any disruption with the lowest RPOs and fastest RTOs in the industry, dramatically limiting data loss and downtime. Zerto helps customers accelerate IT transformation by eliminating the risk and complexity of modernization and cloud adoption.

Advantage of Zerto CDP

  1. Real-time block-level replication. Zerto CDP utilizes change-block tracking to constantly replicate data as it is written to storage.

  2. No performance impact. With Zerto CDP, the journal is only used until the point in time is selected, without the performance impact of many snapshots.

  3. Journal-based, any point-in-time recovery. Journal-based recovery keeps a constant log of all the changes users make to applications and data.

  4. Enterprise scalability. Place the journal on any datastore with maximum size limits and warnings, preventing the datastore from filling, which would otherwise break replication.

  5. Storage savings. Zerto CDP uses no extra space in the source storage as no snapshots are created. Only 7-10 percent of the target storage is used, which frees up significant amounts of space and results in dramatic savings.

  6. Ransomware recovery down to the second. In the event of ransomware or other malicious attacks, recover data to just seconds before the corruption took place, minimizing impact to business.

Zerto Use Cases

1.Data Protection - To effectively capitalize on data while protecting against data loss and ransomware threats, organizations must modernize data protection from edge to cloud — simplifying operations, aligning infrastructure to actual use, and shifting from insurance to insight.

2. Disaster Recovery -  Unplanned downtime from natural disasters, ransomware attacks, and other outages are the biggest availability threats to an organization. With an effective disaster recovery plan and solution in place, organizations become resilient and can easily resume operations with minimal downtime and data loss.

3. Backup and Recovery - Creating backups of collected data is critically important to protect against data failures.  Backup copies allow data to be restored from an earlier point in time, helping businesses recover from an unplanned event and save time and money if failures do occur.

4. Cyber Recovery - The Zerto Cyber Resilience Vault meets the needs to enable enterprises to protect, detect, respond, and recover from ransomware. The Zerto vault leverages the unique strengths of Zerto replication and the Zerto journal, combined with industry-leading hardware from HPE, to deliver rapid air-gapped recovery unlike anything else on the market.

5. Migration - Zerto migration is fast, automating the bulk of the process as well as offering rapid reprotection and easily initiated, one-click rollback—and thanks to always-on continuous data protection and replication. You don’t lose data at any stage.

6. Cloud - Zerto unlocks the cloud for disaster recovery and multi-cloud mobility into one solution that orchestrates and automates your move—in just a few minutes—thus removing complexity and drastically accelerating your cloud adoption projects.

7. Security and Compliance - In addition to staying protected, organizations must ensure they’re able to recover from ransomware. Today's digital landscape requires organizations to accept the reality of ransomware attacks and take measures to keep their data resilient.

8. Solution Integration - Zerto is trusted by over 9,500 customers globally and is powering offerings for Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, and more than 350 managed service providers.

9. Data Reuse - With no impact to production, easily spin up your environment or applications to create self-serve, high-fidelity clones that can be used by your developers, QA, operations, or security teams to accelerate your app development and quality or reduce your threat vulnerabilities.
